Taxes & Net Income

You will keep significantly more net income than in Germany.

If you move from Germany to Switzerland as a physiotherapist, you benefit from a very favorable and simple tax system. Since you will be working with a residence permit (B or L permit) for the first few years, you are subject to withholding tax: income tax and social security contributions are deducted directly from your gross salary each month by your employer. At the end of the year, you generally do not need to file a complicated tax return.

In international comparison, total deductions in Switzerland are very low  on average, only about 20% to 25% of your gross salary goes towards taxes and social security contributions.

1. Social security contributions

approximately 13–15% of gross wages

AHV / IV / EO

State Pension & Disability Insurance

5,3 %

ALV

Unemployment insurance

1,1 %

NBU

Non-occupational accident insurance (leisure)

ca. 1–2 %

BVG

Pension fund, "second pillar"

ca. 5–9 %

These deductions are legally mandated and virtually identical throughout Switzerland. Some employers cover the NBU contribution in full; the BVG contribution depends on your age and the employer’s pension fund.

2. Withholding tax

approximately 8–15% of gross wages

The exact percentage depends on three factors: the canton and municipality where you live (cantons in Central Switzerland such as Zug, Schwyz or Lucerne are extremely tax-friendly (often below 10%), while in French-speaking Switzerland or the canton of Bern the rates are somewhat higher (often 12–15%)); the level of your salary (the more you earn, the higher the tax rate (progressive system)); and your family situation (married or with children you pay significantly less than a single person).

Calculation example

Single · no children · average canton

Gross monthly salary

CHF 6.000.–

Deduction of withholding tax (approx. 10%)

− CHF 840.–

Abzug Quellensteuer (ca. 10 %)

− CHF 600.–

Net payout

≈ CHF 4.560.–

Important: Health insurance (health insurance fund)

Unlike in Germany, mandatory basic health insurance in Switzerland is not automatically deducted from your salary. You receive your full net salary into your bank account and additionally take out your own health insurance, which costs approximately CHF 250 to 350 per month, depending on your place of residence and the chosen deductible (out-of-pocket expenses).
